Documentary Funding: The Budget

Fundraising Museum

Question: I am a museum Curator and I want to find fundraising events that would get people to support a local museum?

This is just a shot in the dark. I am a curator of a small local history museum. As a large park of sustaining ourselves, we need to hold fundraising events.

Here is my problem. I am in a rut. I have done everything I can think of and I’m tired of the standard fundraising events.

I’ve held all the teas, annual dinners and craft workshops that I can handle. So I am turning to the non-museum community for help.

Does anyone have any suggestions for fun – low cost, events that you think people would attend.

As I said before, I have done the standard Quilt Shows, Craft Fairs, Heritage Dinners, Open Houses, Pioneer Days, etc. etc.

I need unique and innovative ideas, that are practical and as easy to put on as possible. (I’m a staff of one!)

Please help me out with any ideas you guys may have that will help me raise some money to keep my job here at the museum!

Also, just so you know, my museum doesn’t have a kitchen so most food related events are not possible.

Answer: Possibilities? Check your back/storeroom for different items that could be put on display. Are there any objects in your current exhibits that can be recombined to create a theme that would attract museum goers? Examples: Farm implements Past to Present; History of Pottery in the Americas (precolumbian to 21st century mass production), Sheep to Shawl (with the local spinning guild), A local holiday/event exhibit (receive on loan, items from local community members). A celebratory opening for each new exhibit. Door prizes, raffles (buy at wholesale, die-cast metal John Deere tractors for the farm impl. exhibit). It IS hard to come up with innovative fund-raisers, espesially when there is not much money to begin with.
