Question: How do I move on with my new career as an editor?
My degree was a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with a minor in English, but I ended up with a 10-year career in nonprofit writing and fundraising. For the past three years I’ve been able to work from home – I have two in elementary school. As a favor to some friends I became an editor for three (hobby industry) publishing companies and I LOVE it. Or I would, but even being an editor for three companies gave me one job this year.
How do I become an editor for other, more mainstream, companies? I’d love to do copyediting for scientific journals, magazines, or novels to begin with before moving up the editing ladder. My location is rural, so all my networking and work would need to be via Internet. Also, I’ve heard about editor certificates – but is that necessary given my experience? Or would graduate school be necessary or even helpful? Any help is greatly appreciated – I thank you in advance.
Answer: Craigslist! Look in the writing section of the help wanted ads for jobs. There’s tons of copy editing positions there.
Also wouldn’t help to check out JournalismJobs.com and MediaBistro.com. Both have several copy editing positions.
It also wouldn’t hurt to incorporate as an LLC. That way you look legal and can take on some marketing/advert clients.
Good luck
