Question: Read-A-Thon – how do you make sure students have really read books?

I am currently looking into the possibility of fundraising for our school library. The concept of a Read-a-thon is not common in Germany but after what I ve found out, it sounds great to me.
Can anyone recommend sites on how to organize it?

And most importantly, how do the sponsors make sure the students deserve the money, they could just go to them and pretend they have read 5 books?

At our school we wouldnt have spare time for the students to read in school but they would have to do that in their free time…

What to do?

Thanks for your advice!!
@Vkto:
The German government has cut the years students stay in school but unfortunately they have forgotten to reduce the amount of things we teachers are supposed to teach them so that’s why there is really no spare time.

Answer: I have my students involved with a program sponsored by Pizza Hut called “Book It”. I require them to read 10 books and then they get the Book-It coupon for a free personal (very small) pizza. I require a list of the books read and a parent signature. If the parents lie, I can’t do much about it, but I assume most are honest. In years past I have had a short Book Report required.

Our school also has “Reading Nights” where the students spend the night at the school and sleep in the library. They get to make food, have lots of fun and of course read.
