Question: GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) members survey?

What do you think is the most important thing the GSA does?
*providing a safe zone for LGBT
*education–There are a lot of awful misinterpretations about homosexuality.
*fundraising–GSA’s can earn money for larger organizations with the same goals.
*campaigning–GSA’s can run phone banks and post signs when important domestic partnership/don’t ask don’t tell/etcetera laws are being voted on.
*Hey, it’s the closest we’ve got to gay speed-dating.

Answer: Out of the four, the first two should take precedence; particularly if you’re talking about a high school GSA.

I used to be the historian of the GSA at my university and we found that it was far better to discuss issues and let the members act individually than to take an official stance. People have a lot of different opinions when it comes to politics and some people have issues with certain national organizations. We debated these issues and let the members come to their own conclusions. Then, they could be informed about what was going on and choose, for themselves, whether or not to support such and such. Obviously, you can give them the option of doing these things with other group members, but it’s better to make it an optional, outside, sign-up-if-you-want activity than it is to dedicate meeting time to it.

In regards to the last one: people will date. For some people, that will be their only reason to go. You can’t really change this, but it’s important to let the members know that the GSA is not intended to be a meat market. Don’t hold date nights or try to be a matchmaking organization. Trust me, most of the members can do just fine on their own.
